Ready For Mexico, But Not For The Planning Headaches?

You’re overwhelmed by the logistics of a Mexico itinerary — transportation, safety, timing, and that ever-growing list of "must-sees."

You crave authentic food and culture, but the thought of ordering at that amazing taqueria or chatting with the mezcal maker feels daunting when your Spanish is more "hola" than "habla."

You want every detail handled, from boutique hotels to that once-in-a-lifetime mole-making class, so you can just show up and savor.

Your group is torn between Mexico vacation locations — Valle de Guadalupe, San Miguel de Allende, and Merida — and you’re stuck playing referee.

You’re worried about missing out on the truly great experiences or booking the wrong activities.

You’ve got a million questions — about weather, safety, or which sotol to try — and need a trusted expert to guide you.

How to Plan a Trip to Mexico: What You Need to Know

Mexico is not one trip… it could be three completely different ones. Beach Mexico (Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun) follows resort logic. Cultural Mexico (Mexico City, Oaxaca) rewards slower, deeper exploration. The Yucatan Peninsula connects history, colonial cities, and coast. Mixing all of these without enough time is a common mistake.

1. Decide What Kind Of Mexico Trip You Want

Beach Mexico is logistically simple and well-served by direct flights.

Cultural Mexico (Mexico City, Oaxaca) is where Salt & Wind Travel’s expertise runs deepest: food markets, mezcal producers, artisan villages.

The Yucatan Peninsula (Merida, Valladolid, Bacalar, Tulum) is its own circuit requiring 10+ days. Most well-planned trips combine two modes, not three.

2. Choose The Right Season

For beach destinations: November through May avoids hurricane season.

For Mexico City and Oaxaca: any time works. The rainy season (June–September) brings afternoon showers but cooler temperatures. For Oaxaca's Day of the Dead (late October–early November), book far in advance. Hotels and guided experiences fill completely.

3. Plan Your Transportation

Domestic flights are efficient: Mexico City to Oaxaca is 45 minutes; Mexico City to Merida is 2 hours. ADO buses cover the Yucatan Peninsula reliably. Uber works well in Mexico City. Outside the capital, use taxis arranged by your hotel.

4. Build In Time For Oaxaca's Market Rhythm

If Oaxaca is on your list, plan around the valley market calendar. The markets happen on specific days and are a completely different experience from the city market.

5. Book Culinary & Cultural Experiences Early

Cooking classes, mezcal distillery visits, and market guide tours book 4–8 weeks out. In Mexico City, the restaurants worth going to (Contramar, Quintonil, Meroma) book weeks ahead.

Salt & Wind Travel’s Kristen hooked us up! Living in the destination of Mexico City meant Kristen was able to connect us with amazing local guides and unique activities.

On our first full day, we had a fantastic time walking around and eating our way through the city with our private guide.
The culinary tour took us to super tasty hole-in-the-wall places so that we could really feel and eat like locals. From the special sorbets to the restaurant with no name, the flavors of the city were incredible.

The team handpicked impeccable accommodations for us in the city and arrange for excursions outside of the city. If you’re considering Mexico City as your next vacation, these are the people to make it happen!
