Does Any Of This Sound Familiar?

You crave authentic experiences on your trip to France but worry about falling into tourist traps.

You’re overwhelmed by the sheer number of “best places to travel to in France” and can’t decide what to include on your France trip itinerary.

Everyone in your group wants something different: wine country, seaside, castles, Roman ruins, city lights, mountain air… how do you fit it into one France itinerary?

You want to savor every meal, but choosing between a classic bistro, a fine dining splurge, or a chic café is giving you decision fatigue.

You want seamless logistics, but navigating French trains, car rentals, bank holidays, and local customs feels daunting.

You want to connect with locals, but your French is limited to “bonjour” and “merci.”

You want a personalized France itinerary, not some generic travel package, but don’t have hours to research every detail.

How to Plan a Trip to France: A Region-by-Region Guide

France is one of the most visited countries in the world, but most first-time visitors make the same mistake: they spend all their time in Paris. Paris deserves it. But France outside of Paris (Provence, Burgundy, the Loire Valley, the Côte d'Azur) rewards travelers who push past the obvious.

Sunbathers relax on the rocky limestone shoreline of Cassis, France, with a red harbor beacon in the foreground and hilltop villas nestled among Mediterranean pine trees in the background.

1. Decide When To Go

Late spring (mid-April through June) is the sweet spot. Warm enough to sit outside, not yet peak season, and the lavender fields in Provence start blooming in late June.

Early fall (September through mid-October) is our other favorite window. Harvest season in Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Alsace, and the summer crowds have thinned.

July and August are beautiful but expensive and crowded, especially in the South. August is also national vacation month in France and many smaller restaurants and shops outside major cities close.

2. Choose Your Focus Region

For a first trip: Paris plus one or two days in the Loire Valley or Normandy.

For repeat visitors: the South of France (Provence, the Côte d'Azur) or wine country (Burgundy, Bordeaux, Alsace).

Don't try to do all of France in one trip! The planning logic for Paris is completely different from the South, and the travel time between regions eats into your experience.

Crowds of tourists gather in the sun-drenched plaza before the iconic Gothic west façade of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, with its twin towers, ornate rose window, and three arched portals set against a vivid blue sky.

3. Plan Your Transportation

The TGV (high-speed rail) is excellent for the Paris–Lyon–Marseille–Nice corridor. A rental car is essential for Provence, the Dordogne, Bordeaux wine country, and Alsace. Do not rent a car in Paris! City driving is overwhelming, parking is scarce, and the Metro covers everything.

A woman stands on a stone bridge gazing at the iconic Château de Chenonceau, a grand Renaissance castle spanning the Cher River in the Loire Valley, France, on a sunny summer day.

4. Make Restaurant Reservations Before You Leave

The best tables in Paris book weeks to months out. Plan at least three dinners in advance. In Provence and smaller French towns, many restaurants close Sunday and Monday. Always check before you go.

Crowds of tourists gather around the ornate gold-sculpted Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles gardens in France, with the Grand Canal and tree-lined promenade stretching into the distance on a sunny day.

5. Book Accommodations Early For The South

Boutique hotels in Provence, Gordes, and the Côte d'Azur fill 4–6 months in advance for summer travel. For harvest-season wine experiences in Burgundy and Bordeaux (September–October), reach out to estates by February.
